Oral Cancer Exam

Surprisingly, during a routine dental check up, dentists discover oral cancer in thousands of American patients each year. The good news is that oral cancer, which includes the mouth and some areas of the throat, ranks as one of the more preventative cancers.

What can Cause Oral Cancer?

Cancer is a complex group of diseases with many possible causes, including genetic factors; diet and physical activity; certain types of infections; and even exposures to various types of chemicals and radiation. However, studies indicate that tobacco use and alcohol use, or both, can increase your chances of developing oral cancer. When you limit or eliminate the ingestion of these two products, you lessen the risk of developing oral cancer.

Signs of Oral Cancer

Please note; just because you may have some of the following oral discomforts, please, do not immediately think you have oral cancer, but, if you do experience any of the following oral discomforts, you want to call Plano Parkway Dental immediately for a dental exam.

  • An area in your mouth that is sore and continuously bleeds and does not heal properly
  • An area in your mouth that senses either numbness or painfulness
  • An area in your mouth that develops a hard spot or lump
  • An area in your mouth that develops either crusty or rough tissue

Another sign of possible oral cancer is a change in the alignment of your upper and lower teeth.

The above are only possible signs of oral cancer. Again, they can also be symptomatic of other dental concerns – not necessarily just oral cancer. What is important is that the early detection of any these signs of oral cancer, which lead to a timely oral cancer exam, will allow Plano Parkway Dental to make a recommendation as to the appropriate treatment for you.

Your Oral Cancer Exam at Plano Parkway Dental

As part of your regular dental check up at Plano Parkway Dental, Dr. Taylor or his hygienist looks for signs of oral cancer, hence, the oral cancer exam. Your oral cavity includes your lips, the lining of your cheeks, the front of your tongue, beneath your tongue, and the roof of your mouth. Your throat area consists of the soft tissue at the back of the roof of your mouth, the back of your tongue, and the tissue where the tongue connects to the base of your mouth. As part of your oral cancer exam, the Plano Parkway Dental staff checks these areas carefully for any signs of change by inspecting your face, neck, lips, and mouth for signs of cancer. Next, the member of the dental team checks the area under your jaw and the sides of your neck for lumps. Finally, he or she examines the insides of your lips and cheeks, as well as your tongue and the roof and floor of your mouth.

You will feel no pain during your oral cancer exam, and the Plano Parkway Dental team can conduct the exam as part of your regular dental check up.
