The term “toothache” means that you are experiencing pain from your tooth, the area surrounding a tooth, or the jawline area near a particular tooth. The most common causes of toothaches include:
- Cracked teeth
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- Exposed tooth roots
Occasionally, a toothache will stem from the jaw joint. Toothaches can also be caused by other medical conditions, such as heart attacks, ear infections, and sinus infections.
When you come to our office, our dentist and hygienist will use a dental X-ray to capture images of your teeth and supporting structures and determine the source of your pain. After diagnosing the problem, we will provide an appropriate treatment to relieve your discomfort and give you back your oral health.
You may develop other symptoms besides pain. Please inform us if you notice any of the following symptoms:
- Gums that are swollen red, or tender
- Gums that bleed easily
- Gums that pull away from your teeth
- Persistent bad breath, or a bad taste that lingers in your mouth
- Loose teeth
- Teeth are misaligned
- Increased tooth sensitivity
- Pain that causes you to avoid brushing certain areas
- Pain when biting or chewing
If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, it may be a sign that you need more extensive treatment.
We encourage you to schedule and keep your routine dental cleanings and exams, as this will help prevent toothaches and other dental problems so that you can avoid the need for more extensive treatments in the future.
