The best way to ensure that you will never lose a tooth to tooth decay is to prevent cavities from developing, and to receive treatment as early as possible if a cavity does develop is to practice good oral hygiene at home and keep all your regular dental appointments. We invite you to call Plano Parkway Dental at 972-519-0990 for more information about cavity prevention in Plano, Texas, and to schedule your appointment with Dr. Jesse Taylor.

Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are caused by harmful bacteria and acids in your mouth. Most frequently, they are the result of poor oral hygiene and a sugary diet. When the sugars and starches in your mouth adhere to the teeth, plaque is formed. Plaque contains bacteria that feeds on the sugars and starches in your mouth, producing acids that damage your tooth enamel and creates holes in your teeth – cavities.

Cavities begin as tiny holes in your tooth. When not treated promptly, these openings continue to grow, and can eventually lead to severe toothaches, infection, tooth loss, or other complications. Common symptoms of cavities include:

  • Toothaches
  • Sensitivity, especially to sweet, hot, and cold substances
  • Pain when biting down

You can prevent cavities by brushing at least twice each day and flossing daily, and by keeping your regular appointments with our dentist. By keeping your mouth clean and healthy, you greatly reduce your risk of developing tooth decay. During your routine dental exams, our dentist will check your mouth for any signs of cavities both visually and with a dental X-ray. Depending on your oral health needs, our dentist may recommend preventive measures, such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants, to help protect your teeth.
