Canker Sores Should Heal Within One Week

One frustration people come across in their mouth health is a canker sore. Canker sores are shallow, small ulcers that can make eating and talking difficult. Sometimes they show up as a single sore, other times you get several at once. They are certainly obnoxious–but fortunately, not contagious.

Unfortunately, doctors are not sure what causes canker sores. Canker sores tend to run in families. However, some experts believe bacteria or viruses are involved. An injury to the soft tissues of the mouth can also cause canker sores.

Though there is not currently a cure for canker sores, there are a few things you can do to lessen the discomfort while you wait. First, call your dentist. Dr. Jesse Taylor may recommend an over-the-counter anesthetic or an over-the-counter antimicrobial mouthwash. Antibiotics from your dentist may help control secondary infection. Avoid any spicy or acidic foods, as they could irritate the sores.

Luckily, the pain should fade in a few days, and the sore should heal on its own within one week. If it is your first time getting canker sores, or if the sore is larger than one centimeter, call Plano Parkway Dental and set an appointment.
